We've closed another successful draft for Sudden Death! We had 17 rounds to fill out our 2 Centers, 2 Left Wings, 2 Right Wings, 2 D-Men, 2 Goalies, 2 Utilities, and 5 Bench slots. That's a lengthy roster for 12 teams, but hopefully it gives everyone a handful of all-stars, a group of elite players, and some wiggle room for day-to-day pick-up / drops. Just enough to make any team lethal in our league! Now that our draft is over I'm going to give a quick recap of the first 10 roundd followed up by my Best and Worst picks of each of them! Feel free to join in by commenting below as well!
Before I get into the recap I just want to once again let everyone know that; now that the draft is over we are increasing the maximum allowed goalies from 2 to 3 per team. Do not be confused... this will not increase the total number of players on your team, it will only allow each team to have an extra goalie if they choose to. We wanted to force everyone to have only 2 slots during the draft so that everyone gets a fair number of starters, and those that want 3 can now choose from the leftovers which are majority time-share goalies.
Now on to the recap!
For those of you that attended... you must have realized that the top two picks were no shows and thus auto picked.... this was my immediate reaction...

First Round Draft Problems |
First Round:
1 | Steven Stamkos, TB C | Team Pastorella |
2 | Sidney Crosby, Pit C | Fresh Prince of Briere |
3 | Alex Ovechkin, Wsh RW | Keep Calm And Bergeron |
4 | Evgeni Malkin, Pit C | Ice Queen |
5 | John Tavares, NYI C | Team burd |
6 | Henrik Lundqvist, NYR G | Streit Outta Compton! |
7 | Erik Karlsson, Ott D | 18 Wheeler |
8 | Corey Perry, Ana RW | Vanek at the Disco |
9 | Phil Kessel, Tor RW | St. Pappys |
10 | Claude Giroux, Phi C | The Big O |
11 | Kris Letang*, Pit D | Moulson ICE |
12 | Patrick Kane, Chi RW | Legion-d'Emery of Doom |
Best Pick: Sidney Crosby, simply put this guy is a beast. He is on another level and likely only joined by Ovechkin. However, he needs to have a full healthy season to realize that potential. In the previous years owners of Crosby could clearly see his over 1 point per game average single handedly crushing their competition, but he spends a lot of time on the IR list. If he gets a full season in, he will lead Fresh Prince of Brier to the finals without a doubt!
Worst Pick: Kris Letang, Don't get me wrong... he's an all-star D-man... but our league focuses a lot on goals and offense this year. Not to mention that rumors of a knee injury started on our draft day. Now he is listed as IR. The guy is an all-star... but just not 1st round draft potential in my book.
Second Round:
13 | Tuukka Rask, Bos G | Legion-d'Emery of Doom |
14 | Henrik Zetterberg, Det C | Moulson ICE |
15 | Anze Kopitar, LA C | The Big O |
16 | Taylor Hall, Edm LW | St. Pappys |
17 | Jonathan Toews, Chi C | Vanek at the Disco |
18 | Craig Anderson, Ott G | 18 Wheeler |
19 | P.K. Subban, Mon D | Streit Outta Compton! |
20 | James Neal, Pit LW | Team burd |
21 | Henrik Sedin, Van C | Ice Queen |
22 | Daniel Sedin, Van LW | Keep Calm And Bergeron |
23 | Pavel Datsyuk, Det C | Fresh Prince of Briere |
24 | Pekka Rinne, Nsh G | Team Pastorella |
Best Pick: Daniel Sedin, he may have had a slump last year when his goals dipped down to just 1 over his assist machine of a brother Henrik, but he's a winger that could easily jump into the top 5 if he can find the chemistry he had with Burrows and Henrik in 2011 - 2012 season.
Worst Pick: Pekka Rinne, he was easily one of the big disappointments last season, and he's coming off of hip surgery which doesn't invoke confidence either. Sure he will get some defensive help from Nashville's drafting of top D-man prospect, Seth Jones, but he's a rookie and unproven thus far. Rinne could end the season in the top 5 goalie rankings forcing me to eat these words, but right now I'd save this pick for 3rd or 4th round.
Third Round:
25 | Dustin Byfuglien, Wpg D | Team Pastorella |
26 | Eric Staal, Car C | Fresh Prince of Briere |
27 | Tyler Seguin, Dal C | Keep Calm And Bergeron |
28 | Rick Nash, NYR LW | Ice Queen |
29 | Ryan Suter, Min D | Team burd |
30 | Chris Kunitz, Pit LW | Streit Outta Compton! |
31 | Jonathan Quick, LA G | 18 Wheeler |
32 | Shea Weber, Nsh D | Vanek at the Disco |
33 | Logan Couture, SJ C | St. Pappys |
34 | Roberto Luongo, Van G | The Big O |
35 | Sergei Bobrovsky, Cls G | Moulson ICE |
36 | Martin St. Louis, TB RW | Legion-d'Emery of Doom |
Best Pick: Chris Kuntiz, this was a tough one. I wouldn't say he's the star out of this group, but I believe he's the safest bet out of them! He will flank Crosby on even strength which will bring plenty of points, but he also flanks Malkin on the powerplay! That means he'll be producing points galore, and in the event of Crosby falling to injury, again, he'll have Malkin to fall back on. He's the best option because he's the safest of all these picks.
Worst Pick: Jonathan Quick, I know I'll likely catch some flak for this one, but hear me out. Quick has a knack for performing under the heavy pressures of the playoffs very well! Come crunch time he's likely your best bet, but during the regular season he seems to lack that drive. And unfortunately our league ends just as the playoffs start... Like Rinne, I may eat these words later, but I think he's worst pick in this round.
Fourth Round:
37 | Zach Parise, Min LW | Legion-d'Emery of Doom |
38 | Ryan Getzlaf, Ana C | Moulson ICE |
39 | Carey Price, Mon G | The Big O |
40 | Corey Crawford, Chi G | St. Pappys |
41 | Nicklas Backstrom, Wsh C | Vanek at the Disco |
42 | Marian Hossa, Chi RW | 18 Wheeler |
43 | Derek Stepan, NYR C | Streit Outta Compton! |
44 | Jamie Benn, Dal LW | Team burd |
45 | Patrick Sharp, Chi LW | Ice Queen |
46 | Alexander Semin, Car RW | Keep Calm And Bergeron |
47 | Mike Green, Wsh D | Fresh Prince of Briere |
48 | Max Pacioretty, Mon LW | Team Pastorella |
Best Pick: Corey Crawford, in my opinion this is just great timing for a solid goalie pick. I can just picture picks 41 - 48 drooling at Crawford's name only to see St. Pappys yank him off their lists! He was a great pick last season that was crippled by a timeshare with Emery, but now that he has a fossil for back-up his value sky rockets!
Worst Pick: Mike Green, He could easily be the best D-man in the league, but we all know he will spend 60% of the season in one of your IR slots. He just can't stop from falling apart. If he does remain healthy all season then he'll help Fresh Prince of Briere immensely, but history tells me that's not happening.
Fifth Round:
49 | Jason Spezza, Ott C | Team Pastorella |
50 | Andrei Markov, Mon D | Fresh Prince of Briere |
51 | Zdeno Chara, Bos D | Keep Calm And Bergeron |
52 | Patrice Bergeron, Bos C | Ice Queen |
53 | Jimmy Howard, Det G | Team burd |
54 | Evander Kane, Wpg LW | Streit Outta Compton! |
55 | Jakub Voracek, Phi RW | 18 Wheeler |
56 | Matt Moulson, NYI LW | Vanek at the Disco |
57 | Thomas Vanek, Buf LW | St. Pappys |
58 | Joe Thornton, SJ C | The Big O |
59 | Johan Franzen, Det RW | Moulson ICE |
60 | Duncan Keith, Chi D | Legion-d'Emery of Doom |
Best Pick: Jason Spezza, not only is he talented, but now he has Bobby Ryan with him. I know he's another injury risk but it's the 5th round and that means it's time to start taking some risk. If Spezza stays healthy he could reach another 80 point season, you all remember when he did that last... it's been a while, but I think he may pull it off.
Worst Pick: Andrei Markov, he has MAJOR knee reconstruction last year, but when he returned from that for the end of the season he looked like nothing ever happened. I think this makes him a decent pick, but that reconstructed knee is going to get some serious work in a non shortened regular season. I think he'll pay off as expected until around February... then Fresh Prince of Brier will be looking to drop him, so beware of a mid season trade for a hot Markov!
Sixth Round:
61 | Matt Duchene, Col C | Legion-d'Emery of Doom |
62 | Dustin Brown, LA LW | Moulson ICE |
63 | Dion Phaneuf, Tor D | The Big O |
64 | Jonathan Bernier, Tor G | St. Pappys |
65 | Marian Gaborik, Cls RW | Vanek at the Disco |
66 | Brad Marchand, Bos LW | 18 Wheeler |
67 | Jordan Eberle, Edm RW | Streit Outta Compton! |
68 | Ryan Callahan*, NYR RW | Team burd |
69 | Kimmo Timonen, Phi D | Ice Queen |
70 | Marc-Andre Fleury, Pit G | Keep Calm And Bergeron |
71 | Niklas Kronwall, Det D | Fresh Prince of Briere |
72 | Joffrey Lupul, Tor LW | Team Pastorella |
Best Pick: Marian Gaborick, honestly I expected him to be taken in the 5th round, but with our low turnout forcing some bad auto-picks he got tossed into the 6th round and was picked up for a steal by Vanek at the Disco! He is also a bit of a gamble seeing as he's on the Blue Jackets questionable offense... but he's scored 40+ in past seasons, so this is a safer gamble than it seems!
Worst Pick: Jonathan Bernier, this is a BIG gamble for St. Pappys to make. Bernier is a good goaltender and worthy of a 2nd on many teams, but drafting him in the 6th round? You'd be better off grabbing someone that you know could produce the W's... but with BIG gambles comes the potential of BIG returns... do you really think Bernier and Toronto will pay off BIG?
Seventh Round:
73 | Patrick Marleau, SJ LW | Team Pastorella |
74 | Cory Schneider, NJ G | Fresh Prince of Briere |
75 | Jarome Iginla, Bos RW | Keep Calm And Bergeron |
76 | Jason Pominville, Min RW | Ice Queen |
77 | Ryan Kesler, Van C | Team burd |
78 | Jeff Carter, LA LW | Streit Outta Compton! |
79 | Patrik Elias*, NJ LW | 18 Wheeler |
80 | Drew Doughty, LA D | Vanek at the Disco |
81 | Milan Lucic, Bos LW | St. Pappys |
82 | Mike Ribeiro, Pho C | The Big O |
83 | Alex Burrows, Van RW | Moulson ICE |
84 | Andrew Ladd, Wpg LW | Legion-d'Emery of Doom |
Best Pick: Jason Pominville, Call me crazy but being on a top line with Zach Parise is just going to make things click for Pominville. I think he's going to have a breakout season that will surprise most!
Worst Pick: Cory Schneider, Obviously over the pre-season he's proven that he can play very well for New Jersey, but he's locked into another timeshare. And this time it's with a goalie New Jersey just wants to claim as a starter to try and cling onto a legend, Mr. Brodeur of course.
Eighth Round:
85 | Bobby Ryan, Ott RW | Legion-d'Emery of Doom |
86 | David Backes, StL C | Moulson ICE |
87 | Alex Pietrangelo, StL D | The Big O |
88 | Tobias Enstrom, Wpg D | St. Pappys |
89 | Antti Niemi, SJ G | Vanek at the Disco |
90 | Wayne Simmonds, Phi RW | 18 Wheeler |
91 | Loui Eriksson, Bos LW | Streit Outta Compton! |
92 | P.A. Parenteau, Col RW | Team burd |
93 | Sergei Gonchar, Dal D | Ice Queen |
94 | James van Riemsdyk, Tor LW | Keep Calm And Bergeron |
95 | Nazem Kadri, Tor C | Fresh Prince of Briere |
96 | Justin Williams, LA RW | Team Pastorella |
Best Pick: Loui Eriksson, as long as he finds chemistry in Boston with Lucic and Krejci then he will be the biggest steal in this draft. It's a bit of a gamble, but when you factor in that he also has dual positions of LW and RW. He's versatile and has great potential! One of my favorite picks this draft.
Worst Pick: Antti Niemi, this was one of the harder choices here. I honestly don't think this is a bad pick-up, but I liked most of the picks this round. The fact is that Niemi had a good season last year, but it was one of his best... and I can only call it good... I don't think he'll keep the same numbers, but I also don't think he will fall very short of them either.
Ninth Round:
97 | Mikko Koivu, Min C | Team Pastorella |
98 | Jonas Hiller, Ana G | Fresh Prince of Briere |
99 | Joe Pavelski, SJ RW | Keep Calm And Bergeron |
100 | Braden Holtby, Wsh G | Ice Queen |
101 | Cam Ward, Car G | Team burd |
102 | Devan Dubnyk, Edm G | Streit Outta Compton! |
103 | Brad Richards, NYR C | 18 Wheeler |
104 | Gabriel Landeskog, Col LW | Vanek at the Disco |
105 | Radim Vrbata, Pho RW | St. Pappys |
106 | Jiri Tlusty, Car LW | The Big O |
107 | Tomas Plekanec, Mon C | Moulson ICE |
108 | Blake Wheeler, Wpg RW | Legion-d'Emery of Doom |
Best Pick: Brad Richards, the guy's numbers have seen better days, but he still produces. He certainly hasn't lost any skill rather he seems to have trouble finding key chemistry. If he finds it we're looking at at upwards of 60 assists, and if not... maybe low 40's. Either way those numbers don't seem too bad! he's a great safe bet.
Worst Pick: Devan Dubnyk, I must say... when I saw this round unfold I cringed at this one... this is how I pictured it... Streit Outta Compton! realized he needed a goalie and it's getting late in the rounds... but he had to pull the trigger on Loui Eriksson in round 8, so he pushed this choice to round 9... and he's smack in the middle so no worries.... right? WRONG... Fresh Prince of Brier, Ice Queen, and Team Burd all felt the same way... and he probably saw his initial picks for the round vanish before your eyes 3 times before he was left with Dubnyk.... I hope Eriksson pays off! For this worst pick I had to post another image with my reaction....

Bad Pick Problems |
Tenth Round:
109 | Scott Hartnell, Phi LW | Legion-d'Emery of Doom |
110 | Brian Campbell, Fla D | Moulson ICE |
111 | Michael Ryder, NJ RW | The Big O |
112 | Cody Hodgson, Buf C | St. Pappys |
113 | Jonathan Huberdeau, Fla LW | Vanek at the Disco |
114 | Mike Richards, LA C | 18 Wheeler |
115 | Mark Streit, Phi D | Streit Outta Compton! |
116 | Tomas Fleischmann, Fla LW | Team burd |
117 | Troy Brouwer, Wsh RW | Ice Queen |
118 | Derick Brassard, NYR C | Keep Calm And Bergeron |
119 | Pascal Dupuis, Pit RW | Fresh Prince of Briere |
120 | Keith Yandle, Pho D | Team Pastorella |
Best Pick: Michael Ryder, I think Ryder has some potential to put up relevant numbers this season. He'll likely see time on different lines as Jersey tries to find their stride, but he'll be touching the puck with some great talent, and he will see power play time. He's a solid pick for players just outside the top 100.
Worst Pick: Brian Campbell, he'll certainly hit his projected numbers, but he'll end the season in the red with +/- and we count those as negatives. He'll get dragged down in value in no time just for wearing a Florida jersey.
Alright GM's, that's my take on the draft picks! You can see my picks in bold in each round as well.
