Draft Recap and Analysis

We've closed another successful draft for Sudden Death!  We had 17 rounds to fill out our 2 Centers, 2 Left Wings, 2 Right Wings, 2 D-Men, 2 Goalies, 2 Utilities, and 5 Bench slots.  That's a lengthy roster for 12 teams, but hopefully it gives everyone a handful of all-stars, a group of elite players, and some wiggle room for day-to-day pick-up / drops.  Just enough to make any team lethal in our league!  Now that our draft is over I'm going to give a quick recap of the first 10 roundd followed up by my Best and Worst picks of each of them!  Feel free to join in by commenting below as well!

Before I get into the recap I just want to once again let everyone know that; now that the draft is over we are increasing the maximum allowed goalies from 2 to 3 per team.  Do not be confused... this will not increase the total number of players on your team, it will only allow each team to have an extra goalie if they choose to.  We wanted to force everyone to have only 2 slots during the draft so that everyone gets a fair number of starters, and those that want 3 can now choose from the leftovers which are majority time-share goalies.

Now on to the recap!

For those of you that attended... you must have realized that the top two picks were no shows and thus auto picked.... this was my immediate reaction...

First Round Draft Problems
First Round:
1Steven Stamkos, TB CTeam Pastorella
2Sidney Crosby, Pit CFresh Prince of Briere
3Alex Ovechkin, Wsh RWKeep Calm And Bergeron
4Evgeni Malkin, Pit CIce Queen
5John Tavares, NYI CTeam burd
6Henrik Lundqvist, NYR GStreit Outta Compton!
7Erik Karlsson, Ott D18 Wheeler
8Corey Perry, Ana RWVanek at the Disco
9Phil Kessel, Tor RWSt. Pappys
10Claude Giroux, Phi CThe Big O
11Kris Letang*, Pit DMoulson ICE
12Patrick Kane, Chi RW  Legion-d'Emery of Doom

Best Pick: Sidney Crosby, simply put this guy is a beast.  He is on another level and likely only joined by Ovechkin.  However, he needs to have a full healthy season to realize that potential.  In the previous years owners of Crosby could clearly see his over 1 point per game average single handedly crushing their competition, but he spends a lot of time on the IR list.  If he gets a full season in, he will lead Fresh Prince of Brier to the finals without a doubt!
Worst Pick: Kris Letang, Don't get me wrong... he's an all-star D-man... but our league focuses a lot on goals and offense this year.  Not to mention that rumors of a knee injury started on our draft day.  Now he is listed as IR.  The guy is an all-star... but just not 1st round draft potential in my book.

Second Round:
Best Pick: Daniel Sedin, he may have had a slump last year when his goals dipped down to just 1 over his assist machine of a brother Henrik, but he's a winger that could easily jump into the top 5 if he can find the chemistry he had with Burrows and Henrik in 2011 - 2012 season.
Worst Pick: Pekka Rinne, he was easily one of the big disappointments last season, and he's coming off of hip surgery which doesn't invoke confidence either.  Sure he will get some defensive help from Nashville's drafting of top D-man prospect, Seth Jones, but he's a rookie and unproven thus far.  Rinne could end the season in the top 5 goalie rankings forcing me to eat these words, but right now I'd save this pick for 3rd or 4th round.

Third Round:
25Dustin Byfuglien, Wpg DTeam Pastorella
26Eric Staal, Car CFresh Prince of Briere
27Tyler Seguin, Dal CKeep Calm And Bergeron
28Rick Nash, NYR LWIce Queen
29Ryan Suter, Min DTeam burd
30Chris Kunitz, Pit LWStreit Outta Compton!
31Jonathan Quick, LA G18 Wheeler
32Shea Weber, Nsh DVanek at the Disco
33Logan Couture, SJ CSt. Pappys
34Roberto Luongo, Van GThe Big O
35Sergei Bobrovsky, Cls GMoulson ICE
36Martin St. Louis, TB RW  Legion-d'Emery of Doom
Best Pick: Chris Kuntiz, this was a tough one.  I wouldn't say he's the star out of this group, but I believe he's the safest bet out of them!  He will flank Crosby on even strength which will bring plenty of points, but he also flanks Malkin on the powerplay!  That means he'll be producing points galore, and in the event of Crosby falling to injury, again, he'll have Malkin to fall back on.  He's the best option because he's the safest of all these picks.
Worst Pick: Jonathan Quick, I know I'll likely catch some flak for this one, but hear me out.  Quick has a knack for performing under the heavy pressures of the playoffs very well!  Come crunch time he's likely your best bet, but during the regular season he seems to lack that drive.  And unfortunately our league ends just as the playoffs start... Like Rinne, I may eat these words later, but I think he's worst pick in this round.

Fourth Round:
37Zach Parise, Min LW  Legion-d'Emery of Doom
38Ryan Getzlaf, Ana CMoulson ICE
39Carey Price, Mon GThe Big O
40Corey Crawford, Chi GSt. Pappys
41Nicklas Backstrom, Wsh CVanek at the Disco
42Marian Hossa, Chi RW18 Wheeler
43Derek Stepan, NYR CStreit Outta Compton!
44Jamie Benn, Dal LWTeam burd
45Patrick Sharp, Chi LWIce Queen
46Alexander Semin, Car RWKeep Calm And Bergeron
47Mike Green, Wsh DFresh Prince of Briere
48Max Pacioretty, Mon LWTeam Pastorella
Best Pick: Corey Crawford, in my opinion this is just great timing for a solid goalie pick.  I can just picture picks 41 - 48 drooling at Crawford's name only to see St. Pappys yank him off their lists!  He was a great pick last season that was crippled by a timeshare with Emery, but now that he has a fossil for back-up his value sky rockets!
Worst Pick: Mike Green, He could easily be the best D-man in the league, but we all know he will spend 60% of the season in one of your IR slots.  He just can't stop from falling apart.  If he does remain healthy all season then he'll help Fresh Prince of Briere immensely, but history tells me that's not happening.

Fifth Round:
49Jason Spezza, Ott CTeam Pastorella
50Andrei Markov, Mon DFresh Prince of Briere
51Zdeno Chara, Bos DKeep Calm And Bergeron
52Patrice Bergeron, Bos CIce Queen
53Jimmy Howard, Det GTeam burd
54Evander Kane, Wpg LWStreit Outta Compton!
55Jakub Voracek, Phi RW18 Wheeler
56Matt Moulson, NYI LWVanek at the Disco
57Thomas Vanek, Buf LWSt. Pappys
58Joe Thornton, SJ CThe Big O
59Johan Franzen, Det RWMoulson ICE
60Duncan Keith, Chi D  Legion-d'Emery of Doom
Best Pick: Jason Spezza, not only is he talented, but now he has Bobby Ryan with him.  I know he's another injury risk but it's the 5th round and that means it's time to start taking some risk.  If Spezza stays healthy he could reach another 80 point season, you all remember when he did that last... it's been a while, but I think he may pull it off.
Worst Pick: Andrei Markov, he has MAJOR knee reconstruction last year, but when he returned from that for the end of the season he looked like nothing ever happened.  I think this makes him a decent pick, but that reconstructed knee is going to get some serious work in a non shortened regular season.  I think he'll pay off as expected until around February... then Fresh Prince of Brier will be looking to drop him, so beware of a mid season trade for a hot Markov!

Sixth Round:
Best Pick: Marian Gaborick, honestly I expected him to be taken in the 5th round, but with our low turnout forcing some bad auto-picks he got tossed into the 6th round and was picked up for a steal by Vanek at the Disco!  He is also a bit of a gamble seeing as he's on the Blue Jackets questionable offense... but he's scored 40+ in past seasons, so this is a safer gamble than it seems!
Worst Pick: Jonathan Bernier, this is a BIG gamble for St. Pappys to make.  Bernier is a good goaltender and worthy of a 2nd on many teams, but drafting him in the 6th round? You'd be better off grabbing someone that you know could produce the W's... but with BIG gambles comes the potential of BIG returns... do you really think Bernier and Toronto will pay off BIG?

Seventh Round:
73Patrick Marleau, SJ LWTeam Pastorella
74Cory Schneider, NJ GFresh Prince of Briere
75Jarome Iginla, Bos RWKeep Calm And Bergeron
76Jason Pominville, Min RWIce Queen
77Ryan Kesler, Van CTeam burd
78Jeff Carter, LA LWStreit Outta Compton!
79Patrik Elias*, NJ LW18 Wheeler
80Drew Doughty, LA DVanek at the Disco
81Milan Lucic, Bos LWSt. Pappys
82Mike Ribeiro, Pho CThe Big O
83Alex Burrows, Van RWMoulson ICE
84Andrew Ladd, Wpg LW  Legion-d'Emery of Doom
Best Pick: Jason Pominville, Call me crazy but being on a top line with Zach Parise is just going to make things click for Pominville.  I think he's going to have a breakout season that will surprise most!
Worst Pick: Cory Schneider, Obviously over the pre-season he's proven that he can play very well for New Jersey, but he's locked into another timeshare.  And this time it's with a goalie New Jersey just wants to claim as a starter to try and cling onto a legend, Mr. Brodeur of course.

Eighth Round:
85Bobby Ryan, Ott RW  Legion-d'Emery of Doom
86David Backes, StL CMoulson ICE
87Alex Pietrangelo, StL DThe Big O
88Tobias Enstrom, Wpg DSt. Pappys
89Antti Niemi, SJ GVanek at the Disco
90Wayne Simmonds, Phi RW18 Wheeler
91Loui Eriksson, Bos LWStreit Outta Compton!
92P.A. Parenteau, Col RWTeam burd
93Sergei Gonchar, Dal DIce Queen
94James van Riemsdyk, Tor LWKeep Calm And Bergeron
95Nazem Kadri, Tor CFresh Prince of Briere
96Justin Williams, LA RWTeam Pastorella
Best Pick: Loui Eriksson, as long as he finds chemistry in Boston with Lucic and Krejci then he will be the biggest steal in this draft.  It's a bit of a gamble, but when you factor in that he also has dual positions of LW and RW.  He's versatile and has great potential!  One of my favorite picks this draft.
Worst Pick: Antti Niemi, this was one of the harder choices here.  I honestly don't think this is a bad pick-up, but I liked most of the picks this round.  The fact is that Niemi had a good season last year, but it was one of his best... and I can only call it good... I don't think he'll keep the same numbers, but I also don't think he will fall very short of them either.

Ninth Round:
97Mikko Koivu, Min CTeam Pastorella
98Jonas Hiller, Ana GFresh Prince of Briere
99Joe Pavelski, SJ RWKeep Calm And Bergeron
100Braden Holtby, Wsh GIce Queen
101Cam Ward, Car GTeam burd
102Devan Dubnyk, Edm GStreit Outta Compton!
103Brad Richards, NYR C18 Wheeler
104Gabriel Landeskog, Col LWVanek at the Disco
105Radim Vrbata, Pho RWSt. Pappys
106Jiri Tlusty, Car LWThe Big O
107Tomas Plekanec, Mon CMoulson ICE
108Blake Wheeler, Wpg RW  Legion-d'Emery of Doom
Best Pick: Brad Richards, the guy's numbers have seen better days, but he still produces.  He certainly hasn't lost any skill rather he seems to have trouble finding key chemistry.  If he finds it we're looking at at upwards of 60 assists, and if not... maybe low 40's.  Either way those numbers don't seem too bad! he's a great safe bet.
Worst Pick: Devan Dubnyk, I must say... when I saw this round unfold I cringed at this one... this is how I pictured it... Streit Outta Compton! realized he needed a goalie and it's getting late in the rounds... but he had to pull the trigger on Loui Eriksson in round 8, so he pushed this choice to round 9... and  he's smack in the middle so no worries.... right? WRONG... Fresh Prince of Brier, Ice Queen, and Team Burd all felt the same way... and he probably saw his initial picks for the round vanish before your eyes 3 times before he was left with Dubnyk.... I hope Eriksson pays off!  For this worst pick I had to post another image with my reaction....
Bad Pick Problems

Tenth Round:
109Scott Hartnell, Phi LW  Legion-d'Emery of Doom
110Brian Campbell, Fla DMoulson ICE
111Michael Ryder, NJ RWThe Big O
112Cody Hodgson, Buf CSt. Pappys
113Jonathan Huberdeau, Fla LWVanek at the Disco
114Mike Richards, LA C18 Wheeler
115Mark Streit, Phi DStreit Outta Compton!
116Tomas Fleischmann, Fla LWTeam burd
117Troy Brouwer, Wsh RWIce Queen
118Derick Brassard, NYR CKeep Calm And Bergeron
119Pascal Dupuis, Pit RWFresh Prince of Briere
120Keith Yandle, Pho DTeam Pastorella
Best Pick: Michael Ryder, I think Ryder has some potential to put up relevant numbers this season.  He'll likely see time on different lines as Jersey tries to find their stride, but he'll be touching the puck with some great talent, and he will see power play time.  He's a solid pick for players just outside the top 100.
Worst Pick: Brian Campbell, he'll certainly hit his projected numbers, but he'll end the season in the red with +/- and we count those as negatives.  He'll get dragged down in value in no time just for wearing a Florida jersey.

Alright GM's, that's my take on the draft picks!  You can see my picks in bold in each round as well.  I'm sure I'll look back at this write up come the post season and eat what I said, but that's how it goes.  If anyone wants to chime in or give a rebuttal please feel free to leave a comment just below this post!  Good luck out there this season GM's, and if you want to see the full draft list it can be found at this link:
